During Black History Month, Roxbury Community College celebrated the 
contributions and achievements of African Americans 

Events Sponsored by Student Organizations 

• The Student Government Association and the Creative Writing and Poetry Club started the month-long 
celebration on February 5 with/a^; and Poetry: Roots and Its Fruit, a poetry and jazz program featuring readings by 
members of the Creative Writing and Poetry Club and jazz by WEJAZZUP. 

• The Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society joined with the Galileo S.T.E.M. Club to sponsor a talk on February 7 by 
Raoul Joseph, a retired Massachusetts Water Resources Authority employee. Mr. Joseph's topic was The Application 
of Chemistry in Environmental Sciences. 

• The Office of Student Life and Engagement and the Student Government Association warmed things up 
on February 12 when they hosted RUMBAFRICA, a five-member group that presented a program of music and 
dance from the Congo. 

• Love was the theme on February 14 when the Student Government Association and the Creative Writing and 

Poetry Club returned with WEJAZZUP for a special Black History Month/ Valentine's Day Spoken Word and Music 
Program. 

• The Criminal Justice Club invited The Honorable Judge Shannon Frison, a judicial nominee for the Massachusetts 
Superior Court, to speak to the College community on February 19. Judge Frison was joined by representatives of 
the Boston Police, Transit Police, and State Police who spoke about the Police Exam. 

• Sister to Sister and Mentoring for Success sponsored Motivational Speaker, Author, and Empowerment Coach 
Nicole Roberts Jones on February 21 who spoke on the topic, Define Your Own Way: Empowering Women of Color. On 
the same day Mentoring for Success organized a round-table discussion focused on The Current State of Black and 
Hispanic Men in America. 

• The Student Government Association hosted a Black History Month Eunch featuring guest speaker Mike Curry, 
President of the Boston Chapter of the NAACP. The event took place at 1:30 p.m. on February 26 in the student 
cafeteria. 

Library Resources 

Books 

• The RCC Library has recently received several new African American books. Below are sample titles of books in 
the library. These titles are among 2, 069 books on the African American experience available in the library.

Videos 

The library currendy has 222 streaming videos on the African American experience. Among those videos are the ones 
listed below:

Database 




The library has an outstanding database on the African American experience. It is called The African American 
Experience, Academic Edition, published by ABC/CLIO. 






African American Quilts 

• Professor Michelle Howard-Harrell and her quilting sisters have a new selection of 20 African American quilts 
hanging in the RCC library. This is the 7th consecutive year that the group has displayed quilts. The current display 
will be up until March 15. 









Timeline of African American History 

• A sweeping 35-foot-long Timeline of African American History, featuring pictures and captions of the arrival of 
the first slave ship in 1619 up to the Obama Administration, is now hanging in the 2nd floor window of the library.
